In a community in Orkut I have found some interesting site!; IMAP for Gmail petition.
Let me blockquote them to figure out what it is about!:
Gmail, imap. Does Gmail support IMAP? (http://gmail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=10339)
Gmail doesn’t currently support IMAP access. As part of our ongoing commitment to give our users easy access
to their email, we have introduced POP access. We look forward to announcing more features as they become available.—–
Q-Why this petition?
Google has recently provided POP3 access to Gmail.
While POP3 is fine, many would prefer IMAP support.
We are hopeful that Google will provide IMAP as a free or paid service.
Q-Why is IMAP better than POP3 for Gmail?
Gmail offers 2+GB of space. In 2 GB you can store 120,000 – 500,000 emails.
IMAP maintains the folders created in your webmail account while POP3 does not.
There are no folders in gmail, instead there are “labels” but they serve
the same purpose*.Can folders and labels be implemented in a IMAP mail system?
Fastmail has done just that.If you use IMAP currently, you will appreciate IMAP’s benefits with gmail.
So, go ahead and sign the petition.
However it’s not totally impossible as somebody made it possible! 🙂 You can read about this here!
Enjoy! 🙂
